Xenerais da Ulla, Fao, Spain, March 5, 2019
Documenting the Xenerais is not always about the revelry of the atranques (satirical verbal battles). More often, it is about the long ride from village to village and house to house within the parish. Since Carnival falls in February and March, rain is a constant companion; if they are lucky, an umbrella offers a brief reprieve. At every doorstep, they shout vivas (cheers) to the neighbors and share a drink before galloping off to the next home. For the photographer, it becomes a literal race—running to keep pace and arrive in time for the next viva.
