Ribeiro de Baijo, Portugal, August 7, 2019
In the borderlands of the Limia River—known as the Lima in Portuguese—music and dance cross the non-existent border without a passport. The Vira, the most famous of these dances, is performed on both sides of the river, even when the weather turns and the rain begins to fall. In 2019, through the initiative of musician and writer Xurxo Souto, the first international Olelas-Ribeiro de Baijo route was held, recreating the journey made half a century ago by the young men of both villages. At the end of the mountain trek, the participants danced a Vira in the rain next to the local church in the Portuguese town.
