Working alongside masters is a dual challenge: the hunger to learn competes with the weight of their legacy. Humberto Rivas, winner of the 1997 National Photography Prize, led a workshop during his 1999 exhibition at the CGAC. A master of portraiture, he challenged us to capture a single frame with a large-format camera, seeking the hidden depth in a subject’s gaze. As a working photographer, I used the opportunity not only to absorb his wisdom but to take his portrait, applying the very principles he had just taught us.
